The AZA Collection is rhythm captured. Unlike a song which has a duration, the beats featured inside this artwork have no beginning or end. They are ever-present and reveal a face to what was formally just heard.
"Rhythm-on-Canvas" is a new medium in art led by drummers. To build the artwork, Calhoun utilized a variety of lit drumsticks of difference colors, speeds, and temperatures to construct the rhythms that would become the AZA Collection.
As for "rhythm-on-canvas," Calhoun is an important figure from this medium's inception. For years he utilized lit drumsticks to capture audiences in his live performances with Living Colour. Hence, when the concept of crafting artwork through capturing rhythm was presented, Calhoun understood the new medium and was prepared to create.
